“…Later work by Vaysse, Bastie, Pascal, Martinel, Fourtanier & Ribet (1977), using the isolated blood-perfused canine pancreas, and by Demol & Sarles (1980), using the conscious rat, supported this view. As inhibition of pancreatic E. E. ELISHA, D. HUTSON AND T. SCRATCHERD secretion and vasoconstriction occur at the same time, (Barlow, Greenwell, Harper & Scratcherd, 1965, 1971Vaysse et al 1977;Heidbreder, Sieber & Heidland, 1978) and as both appear to be mediated through the a-receptor, a pharmacological approach using receptor-blockade techniques does not differentiate between the two events (Dzieniszewski, Tiscornia, Palasciano & Sarles, 1974;Vaysse et al 1977;Demol & Sarles, 1980). This paper describes experiments which attempt to divorce vasomotor and secretary events and demonstrates that noradrenaline exerts its effects both directly on the secretary cell and indirectly by virtue of local vasoconstriction.…”
