Exogenous Cytokinins Increase Grain Yield of Winter Wheat Cultivars by Improving Stay-Green Characteristics under Heat Stress

Abstract: Stay-green, a key trait of wheat, can not only increase the yield of wheat but also its resistance to heat stress during active photosynthesis. Cytokinins are the most potent general coordinator between the stay-green trait and senescence. The objectives of the present study were to identify and assess the effects of cytokinins on the photosynthetic organ and heat resistance in wheat. Two winter wheat cultivars, Wennong 6 (a stay-green cultivar) and Jimai 20 (a control cultivar), were subjected to heat stress … Show more

“…Heat stress reduces cytokinin levels in seed leading to reduced seed cell numbers and growth rates ( Emery et al, 2000 ; Jameson and Song, 2016 ). According to Yang et al (2016) , treatment with CK (6-benzylaminopurine) diminishes the inhibitory effect of heat stress on seed filling rate, division rate of endosperm, endosperm cell number, and seed weight in soybean. Heat stress regulates GA biosynthesis and catabolism in developing seeds to reduce GA-associated seed growth and development processes ( Ozga et al, 2017 ).…”

“…CKs stimulate the antioxidant system upon heat stress . Their exogenous application can positively affect photosynthesis in heat stress (Yang et al, 2016). However, the precise mechanism of CK functions remains to be elucidated.…”

“…CK are the most potent general coordinator between the stay-green trait and senescence. Stay-green can not only increase the yield of wheat but also its resistance to heat stress during active photosynthesis [ 6 ]. Exogenous cytokinins can sustain longer active photosynthetic period during the grain filling stage, transfer more assimilates to the grain [ 7 ], and increase grain yield under heat stress [ 6 ].…”
