Exfoliated/Intercalated Rubber/Organo‐Montmorillonite Nanocomposites: Preparation and Characterization

Abstract: The preparation of new rubber based nanocomposites by using properly modified organophilic clays is described. A commercial organophilic montmorillonite containing a hydroxylated ammonium ion is reacted with LPBs. The reaction causes a decrease of the polarity of the clay and a great increase of the interlayer distance. The modified organoclays are successfully dispersed into rubber matrices (SBR or BR) by melt blending in an internal batch mixer. SAXS analyses and TEM micrographs revealed the formation of hig… Show more

“…[24] Hence, addition of suitable coupling agents, modifiers or compatibilizers, or chemical modification of clay into organophilic is essential in the preparation of rubber/clay composites. Various research on rubber/clay composites particularly on NR, [25,54,55,56] SBR, [57,58,59] BR, [58,60,61] and EPDM [13,24,26,52,62] have been carried out in the past and can be found in the literature.…”

“…By reducing the size of the reinforcements from micrometers to nanometers, the nanocomposites reinforced with nano-sized particles exhibit superior mechanical, thermal and barrier, and permeability properties [ 2 ]. Recently, the development of rubber-based nanocomposites has attracted great interest and nano-sized fillers such as layered silicates, carbon nanotubes, metal oxides and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles have been widely used to prepare them [ 3 ].…”
