Exercise training improves the IL-10/TNF-α cytokine balance in the gastrocnemius of rats with heart failure

Abstract: HighlightsHF increases pro-inflammatory cytokines levels in gastrocnemius.Exercise training reverses the atrophy of gastrocnemius induced by HF.Exercise training increases IL-10 and decreases TNF-α level in gastrocnemius.

“…In addition to IL-6, other myokines may also have different kinds of anti-inflammatory cytokine properties. It has been shown that long-term exercise can increase the production and secretion of IL-10 in the skeletal muscles [38]. In a peripheral nerve injury mouse model, two weeks of low-intensity exercise was found to inhibit peripheral and central neuroinflammatory responses via upregulation of IL-4 [37].…”

“…Thus, an increase of a number of NK cells during the PE-CATs interaction may be responsible for lowering inflammation and enhancing the immune system [3,4,17,18,138]. Furthermore, moderate-to-vigorous PE enhances the antioxidant defense via up-regulating resistance to OS, owing to the fact that moderate elevated concentrations of AD and NA increase concentrations of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, interleukin-1-receptor (IL-1RA) and IGF-α [139,140]. The beneficial effect of training with moderate intensity for 6 months and 12 months on low-grade inflammation in overweight and/or obese women manifesting as decrease of leptin, resistin, and IL-6 has been confirmed [127].…”

“…Aerobic training associated with an acute myocardial infarction is also responsible for an increase in GLUT4 33 expression and increased serum levels of netrin-1, myocardial netrin-1 and DCC receptor, reduced the expression of myocardial proteins MMP2 and MMP9, to improving the degree of fibrosis after myocardial infarction in rats 34 , and also not only attenuates the level of TNF-α, but also improves the level of cytokine IL-10 in the skeletal muscle of rats with heart failure 35 .…”
