Exercise, bodyweight perception and related weight loss behavior among adolescents in Trinidad and Tobago

Abstract: Almost one third of the students were overweight or obese. Overweight students were motivated to lose weight, and these students need to have some structured health promotion program, which educates them on correct exercise habits, safe measures to lose weight, and which informs them of their actual body weight.

“…Swedish patients in primary care settings were found to be more compliant with home-based physical activities over facility-based activities. [16] In the Caribbean, exercise facilities are not readily available for patients to access and where they are available the cost to access them may be prohibitive for the average patient. In the UK, “lack of money” was a significant barrier to adherence to exercise at exercise facilities.…”

“…“Sedentary” patients have been defined differently in different studies with some studies looking at persons who exercise less than five times per week as being sedentary[1] and some looking at less than 30 minutes per week of exercise as being sedentary. [16] Attempting to get truly sedentary patients to begin exercising is more difficult than getting persons already exercising to increase their weekly exercise load. [6]…”

“… 10 In contrast, about 28% of 363 students aged 15–18 years in Trinidad and Tobago misclassified their body weight and perception of body weight influenced weight loss behaviours more than actual body weight. 11 In a study in 250 schoolchildren in Puerto Rico, most overweight/obese children did not perceive themselves as such. Although slightly more girls tended to perceive themselves as overweight, there was no significant difference between boys and girls.…”
