Exercise alleviates depression related systemic inflammation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients

Abstract: Background: Depression is a highly prevalent co-morbidity in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which was shown to be associated with a worse course of disease, including reduced quality of life and increased symptoms burden, healthcare use, and even mortality. It has been speculated that systemic inflammation may play a role in the presence of depression. Currently, physical activity is an important lifestyle factor that has the potential to modify inflammatory cytokines and depression, however our … Show more

“…A meta-analysis has previously identified low mood and stress as two of the most significant barriers to exercise in mental illness [38]. However, exercise has also been demonstrated to improve mood associated with reduction in depression-associated inflammation in COPD [39] and in health [40]. A similar pattern has been seen with QoL where exercise specific self-efficacy has been shown to correlate with health related QoL in COPD [41].…”

“…Depression is commonly found in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A study investigated the effect of aerobic exercise in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients [116]. They found aerobic exercise significantly decreased depression and peripheral inflammation markers including IL-6 in these patients.…”

“…Inflammation has an important role in the development and progression of COPD (35). SP-D is positively asso ciated with the severity of COPD, and SP-D may successfully differentiate COPD from other respiratory symptoms or diseases (36).…”
