Exclusion of Salt Solutions from Activated Carbon Pores and the Relationship to Contact Angle on Graphite

Abstract: The exclusion of salts from the pores of activated carbon granules is demonstrated for the first time for the salts K 2 CO 3 , K 2 HPO 4 and K 3 PO 4 . In soaking experiments, the concentrations of solutions of K 2 CO 3 , K 2 -HPO 4 , and K 3 PO 4 inside the pores are less than in the bulk solutions. This phenomenon is observed by measuring the bulk concentration, which increases upon addition of carbon. This suggests that these salts are repelled by the carbon surface.
