Excitation of Bloch surface wave on tapered fiber coated with one-dimensional photonic crystal for refractive index sensing

Abstract: We have theoretically and experimentally demonstrated a novel approach to excite Bloch surface wave (BSW) on tapered optical fibers, which are coated with one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC) consisting of periodic TiO2 and Al2O3 by atomic layer deposition technology. Two resonant dips are found in transmission spectra that are originated from the excitation of BSW for p-polarized light and s-polarized light, respectively. For the first time, we have demonstrated the develop… Show more

“…In addition, the angular [ 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 60 ] or the wavelength interrogations [ 46 , 61 , 62 , 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 ] have been employed. Similarly to the SPR based fiber optic sensors, fiber sensors with MDSs have been reported [ 67 , 68 , 69 , 70 ], and MDSs have been deposited on a tapered fiber [ 67 ] or on the outer surface of optical fiber [ 68 ]. Moreover, configurations with the MDSs deposited at the tip of a single-mode fiber [ 69 ] or inside of a photonic crystal fiber [ 70 ] have been considered.…”

“…Atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology is the ideal method for the deposition of the 1 DPC/metal multilayers. It has been proven to fabricate high quality 1 DPC on the outer surface of solid-core fiber [ 22 ]. To satisfy the condition of total reflection, the RI of analyte outside the fiber should be lower than that of the fiber core.…”

“…Additionally, the accessible surface area of a BSW structure can be increased using a porous dielectric, which results in improved sensitivity toward small molecules [27,28]. More recently, fiber optic sensors with multilayer structures have been reported [29][30][31][32], including configurations in which multilayer structures have been deposited on a tapered fiber [29], on the outer surface of optical fiber [30], at the tip of a single-mode fiber [31], and inside of a photonic crystal fiber [32].…”
