Excess serum uric acid is associated with metabolic syndrome in obese adolescent patients

Abstract: Purpose Obesity is a significant cause of morbidity in adolescents. Excess serum uric acid (SUA) has been associated with metabolic syndrome (MS) among adults. We evaluated the relationship among SUA and markers of insulin resistance (IR) and low-grade inflammation in obese adolescents with and without MS. Methods The study was a retrospective chart review of obese patients seen in the LeBonheur Endocrine clinic seen in clinic between September 2016 and December 2017. MS was defined as according to the Interna… Show more

“…The association of hyperuricemia with metabolic syndrome and increased cardiovascular risk was well known in the medical literature [ 2 , 51 , 52 ]. In this study, we found that 9.3% of the patients with polypharmacy were prescribed inhibitors of uric acid production in 2015, with a prevalence ratio of 1.6 compared to 2005.…”

“…Obesity is also an important risk factor for hyperuricemia, gout, and insulin resistance, which is harmful to the development of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and diabetes mellitus [ 24 ]. The disorder of lipid metabolism is an important reason for elevation of uric acid levels caused by obesity [ 25 , 26 ]. Akkermansia muciniphila , a kind of intestinal anaerobes, mainly grows in the intestinal mucinous layer of mammals [ 27 ].…”

“…Uric acid is the end product of purine metabolism and is secreted by the kidney [1]. Elevated levels of serum uric acid level (SUA) can result from decreased renal clearance [1]. Hyperuricemia is an abnormal condition with higher level of uric acid in the blood [2].…”

“…Hyperuricemia is an abnormal condition with higher level of uric acid in the blood [2]. Hyperuricemia is due to an imbalance of increased production of uric acid or/and decreased excretion of uric acid, which may result in serious complications including gout, tophi, kidney stones, or urate nephropathy even kidney failure [1,2] . In human, if the concentration of SUA reaches to 357 μmol/l (6 mg/dl) for women and 416 μmol/l (7.0 mg/dl) for men, hyperuricemia could be diagnosed [2].…”
