Examples of XRF and PIXE imaging with few microns resolution using SLcam® a color X‐ray camera

Abstract: We present results of recent development of the color X-ray camera, type SLcam r , allowing detection of X-ray images with few microns resolution. Such spectral resolution is achieved with the use of high-quality polycapillary optics combined with sub-pixel resolution. Imaging of Siemens star resolution test chart reveals that the resolution limit of SLcam r can go down to nearly 5 m. Several real sample examples of measurements carried out at the laboratory, synchrotron, and particle-induced X-ray emission be… Show more

“…on the other hand, SDD provides an excellent energy resolution with high count rates. [28,29,38] The continuous developments in X-ray tubes and detectors allowed the manufacturers to build reliable handheld portable-XRF systems well equipped with Peltier-cooled SDDs and X-ray tubes having 50 kV maximum voltage. With the use of portable vacuum pumps, the sensitivity of the spectrometers was enhanced especially to detect lighter elements having low atomic numbers (Z).…”

“…Meanwhile, this full‐field camera has found use in different fields of application—for example, X‐ray absorption near‐edge structure spectroscopy or X‐ray transmission radiography and tomography . With respect to lateral resolution, an overview of the available varieties and applications of such systems, also known under its trademark name SLcam ® , is given in previous studies …”

“…The focus is on improving the lateral resolution and overcoming optics artefacts without impeding further developments in terms of quantification. The imaging enhancements presented in this paper are image‐stacking, multiframe super‐resolution, which is closely related to image‐stacking, flat‐field correction, and the previously described subpixel correction, for example, Nowak et al All enhancements were accomplished on data gathered with the full‐field PIXE set‐up at HZDR.…”

“…Single photon counting mode is achievable even at relatively high photon count rates as available at synchrotron or PIXE endstations. 15 A standalone pnCCD is used for spatially resolved X-ray transmission 16 , diffraction 17 or scattering measurements 18 . However, in order to achieve an image of X-ray fluorescence, X-ray photons should be explicitly guided from small regions on a sample to corresponding pixels on a detector.…”
