To emphasize the relationship between the pre-seismic geomagnetic signals and Vrancea seismicity, in this work it is hypothesized that before an earthquake initiation, the high stress reached into seismogenic volume generates dehydration of the rocks and fracturing processes followed by release of electric charges along the faulting systems, which lead to resistivity changes. These changes were explored on September 2016 by the normalized function Bzn obtained from the geomagnetic data recorded in ULF range (0.001-0.0083 Hz). A statistical analysis was also performed to discriminate on the new Bzn* time series a pre-seismic signature related to the Mw5.7 earthquake. Significant anomalous behavior of Bzn* was identified on September 21, with 3 days prior to the onset of the seismic event. Similar information is provided by registrations of the magnetic and electron concentration variations in the ionosphere over the Vrancea zone, by Swarm satellites, 4 days and 1 day before the earthquake.

Abstract. The classic approach to calculate the electrostatic field penetration, from the Earth's surface into the ionosphere, is to consider the following equation ∇· σ ·∇ =0 whereσ and are the electric conductivity and the potential of the electric field, respectively. The penetration characteristics strongly depend on the conductivities of atmosphere and ionosphere. To estimate the electrostatic field penetration up to the orbital height of DEMETER satellite (about 700 km) the role of the ionosphere must be analyzed. It is done with help of a special upper boundary condition for the atmospheric electric field. In this paper, we investigate the influence of the ionospheric conductivity on the electrostatic field penetration from the Earth's surface into the ionosphere.We show that the magnitude of the ionospheric electric field penetrated from the ground is inverse proportional to the value of the ionospheric Pedersen conductance. So its typical value in day-time is about hundred times less than in night-time.

“…By studying remote sensing satellite data, researchers have found various abnormal events in the lithosphere, atmosphere and ionosphere prior to large earthquakes, which are reflected in thermal infrared (TIR) anomalies (Gorny et al, 1988;Tronin, 1996;Tramutoli et al, 2005;Pulinets et al, 2006), and ionospheric anomalies (Pulinets and Boyarchuk, 2004;Hayakawa, 2000;Liu et al, 2004;Sarkar et al, 2007;Parrot et al, 2006) prior to the earthquake events. The latest advancements in lithospheric-atmospheric-ionospheric models provide a possible explanation for the origin of these phenomena (Pulinets and Boyarchuk, 2004;Pulinets and Ouzounov, 2011;Liperovsky et al, 2005Liperovsky et al, , 2008Liperovsky et al, , 2011Umarkhodgaev et al, 2012), permitting us to explore possible new studies of the spatial and temporal variability of remote sensing data before and during major earthquakes.…”

This paper presents a validation and confutation analysis using the methods of the robust satellite data analysis technique (RST) to detect seismic anomalies within the bi-angular Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) data based on spatial/temporal continuity analysis. The distinguishing feature of our method is that we carried out a comparative analysis of seismic anomalies from bi-directional observation, which could help understanding seismic thermal infrared (TIR) anomalies. The proposed method has been applied to analyse bi-angular AATSR gridded brightness temperature data with longitude from 5 to 25° E and latitude from 35 to 50° N associated with the earthquake that occurred in Abruzzo, Italy, on 6 April 2009, and a full data set of 7 yr data from 2003 to 2009 during the months of March and April has been analysed for validation purposes. Unperturbed periods (March–April 2008) have been considered for confutation analysis. Combining with the tectonic explanation of spatial and temporal continuity of the abnormal phenomena, along with the analysed results, a number of anomalies could be associated with possible seismic activities, which follow the same time and space. Therefore, we conclude that the anomalies observed from 29 March 2009 to 5 April 2009, about eight days before the Abruzzo earthquake, could be earthquake anomalies
