Examining Subtypes of Behavior Problems Among 3-Year-Old Children, Part I: Investigating Validity of Subtypes and Biological Risk-Factors

Abstract: This study examined 3-year-old children who were classified as hyperactive (HYP), oppositional-defiant (OD), hyperactive and oppositional defiant (HYP/OD), and non-problem based on mothers' reports of behavior. Using fathers,' teachers,' and observers' ratings of children's behavior, concurrent validity was excellent for the HYP/OD group, moderate for the HYP group, and poor for the OD group. As predicted, both the HYP/OD and HYP groups reported more prenatal/perinatal birth complications and a greater family … Show more

“…For example, previous studies indicate that the overlap between hyperactivity-impulsivity and oppositional-defiance behaviors is significant in early childhood, and emphasize the relevance of distinguishing between "pure" and "comorbid" cases (Harvey et al 2007;Huijbregts et al 2007). These co-morbidities deserve further longitudinal investigation both with respect to their etiologies and clinical outcomes.…”

“…Inattention problems appear later, at around the time of school entry, and tend to persist beyond adolescence (Applegate et al 1997). These etiological and developmental patterns militate for the early assessment of hyperactive and impulsive behaviors in order to more precisely document their onset, evaluate whether they are a stable or transient (Harvey et al 2007), and assess their predictive validity.…”
