Background and Objective: The demand for course aggregate is increasing every day. Natural aggregate used for ordinary concrete is obtained by quarrying, which cause serious environmental issues. An alternate course aggregate is needed for sustainable development. The objective of this research is to produce an alternative course aggregate in combination with soil available locally near site along with fly ash, to test its properties to make it fit for concrete. Method: An alternative coarse aggregate is produced from red soil and fly ash mixed at various ratios, 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, 50:50, fresh aggregate granules of different sizes less than 10mm is prepared using hand press, the aggregates were sundried in shade for 24hours, oven dried at 110°C, burned in Muffle furnace at temperature of 950°C and cooled gradually to reach room temperature. After the production, the specific gravity, bulk density, water absorption, Impact and aggregate crushing of the aggregates were tested. Result: Test results showed that aggregates produced are of lesser specific gravity, density with relatively appreciable impact value and crushing value. Conclusion: The test results show that the aggregates produced can be used in construction as replacement for natural aggregates.

The aim of this study is to put forward a prediction scheme for the expandability of clays by use of inexpensive and rapid chemical analysis. Seventy clay ores from fourteen locations throughout central and west Turkey were characterized mineralogically, chemically, and for expansion testing. Using the ternary plotting scheme of SiO 2-Al 2 O 3-fl uxing samples exceeding 50% expansion plotted within and slightly beyond the region proposed by Riley (1951). This study newly extends the region in ternary space for samples suitable for expansion and use in light weight aggregate. Non-expanding samples are associated with mineral assemblages dominated by quartz. In this study, it was determined that the samples without the expandability property were lacking the required chemical aspect of SiO 2-Al 2 O 3-fl uxing ratios, mineralogical clay structures, proportions and gas agents. In addition, the effect of having a too low or high position on the triangle diagram was found to have a negative impact on the expandability. When mineralogical analyses, mineral associations, chemical compositions and expandability results were evaluated together, it was observed that Mica GM-Chloride GM; Montmorillonite-Zeolite-Amorphous matter and Clay GM-Amorh Silica-Cristobalite are the samples showing expandability properties for the extent of this study. Also, it was noted that almost all samples with graphite content did expand. The extension of the suitability fi eld on the ternary diagram for prediction of expansion properties, combined with low cost and rapid chemical analysis demonstrate benefi ts for the clay production industry in Turkey, particularly for saving energy and fi nancial resources needed during exploration and early stages of production clay ores.

RESUMO Os concretos leves podem ser utilizados na construção civil como isolamento térmico e acústico, cobrimento de lajes, produção de placas, entre outros. Produzidos a partir de argila expandida, que apresentam massa unitária entre 300 e 2000 kg/m3, os materiais garantem redução do peso de estruturas favorecendo a diminuição dos custos com as fundações. Neste trabalho, foi estudado o melhor arranjo granulométrico de argilas expandidas de granulometrias de diâmetro 22, 15 e 5 mm, com o fim de produzir placas de concreto com baixo peso específico e sem alteração da resistência mecânica à flexão em três pontos, em comparação as que são confeccionadas a partir de britas convencionais. As matérias-primas foram caracterizadas por meio da massa unitária, massa específica, absorção de água, análise granulométrica, análise química por fluorescência de raios X (FRX) e foram determinadas as fases presentes por difratometria de raios X-DRX. Em seguida, foi utilizado o diagrama triangular de Winkler com o intuito de obter as massas unitárias e os respectivos empacotamentos. Este diagrama é pouco difundido no segmento de construção civil e pode ser muito útil para realizar misturas de até três componentes e avaliar qualquer propriedade, definindo uma região ótima de trabalho. Foram escolhidos pontos do diagrama com diferentes massas unitárias, para produção de corpos de prova de concreto com argila expandida e com o agregado convencional. Os corpos de prova foram submetidos ao ensaio de resistência mecânica à flexão em três pontos e densidade aparente. Os resultados mostraram que houve redução de 30% a 50% no peso das peças, sem alteração da resistência mecânica nas formulações A e D. Vale ressaltar que a densidade e resistência mecânica das formulações A e D foram as maiores em relação às argilas expandidas, provavelmente devido ao menor abatimento apresentado além da elevada massa unitária mostrada no diagrama ternário.
