Evolution of Urban Socio-Spatial Structure in Modern Times in Xi’an, China

Abstract: Urban socio-spatial structure has been extensively studied in the Western context but is less researched in Chinese cities, particularly those in less developed regions. To clarify its evolution and evolutionary mechanisms, the city of Xi'an is considered as an empirical case, using factor ecological analysis for modern times. Research results are concluded as follows: the types and affecting factors of social space continued to increase. Urban socio-spatial structure evolved from single-core pattern to single… Show more

“…These three things show the differentiation of community work in relation to the function of the developing urban space. The social differentiation that is built is directly related to the level of income economically, social status, lifestyle, consumption patterns, and the combination of social groups in geographic space [102,103], which signify the increasing socio-spatial differentiation of urban space [104,105]. This means that the socio-spatial structure of a city is closely related to political, physical, economic, and social transformations [106,107].…”

“…In other words, a 'neighbourhood' is a complex that encompasses both the internal physical space, such as buildings, roads, open spaces and public facilities, and the internal social elements, such as interpersonal relations, community structures, economic flows, and the maintenance and management of facilities. Particularly in urban studies, the 'neighbourhood' has been characterised as a Socio-Spatial Schema in order to precisely perceive and explain the concept of 'community' locally [17,18]. This framing allows scholars and practitioners to better comprehend the neighbourhood as a whole or in it constituent parts by deconstructing into smaller, measurable elements which can be observed and assessed.…”

“…These three factors are determinants of spatial transformation to facilitate the functions of commercial activities, large-scale settlements, and changes in the social formation of local communities. Rapid economic and social development is exerting sustained pressure on land demands [70]. The landscape is a very dynamic system with natural and social interconnected systems that are strongly affected by constant change [66].…”
