A number of late Quaternary subaerial silicic tephra erupted from the Taupo Volcanic Zone are dispersed at least 230 km to the northeast of New Zealand, and are deposited as predominantly airfall vitric ash; other tephra are recognised as reworked ash turbidites. Tephra occurring as both megascopic and nonmegascopic ash within three piston cores from the Bay of Plenty -southern Havre Trough are used to establish a c. 55 ka old marine tephrostratigraphy. On the basis of core stratigraphy, 14 C dating, glass chemistry, and ferromagnesian mineralogy, the Kaharoa, Taupo, Mamaku, Waiohau, ?Okareka, Kawakawa, Omataroa, Hauparu, Tahuna, and ?Rotoehu Tephras are identified between 160 and 350 km from source. Peralkaline tephra from previously unrecognised Mayor Island eruptions are identified at c. 30 and 55 ka, and possibly 11.5 ka. Other tephra comprising pumiceous ashlapilli, and low SiO2 silicic glass, are also identified, but cannot be reliably correlated to a volcanic centre source. Occasional shards of andesit i c and dacitic composition are probably largely derived from White Island eruptions.Provisional northerly seaward limits of airfall dispersal are presented for nine late Quaternary silicic tephra. Within the Bay of Plenty region, the c. 36 ka Hauparu Tephra has an extensive distribution comparable to that of the c. 22.6 ka Kawakawa Tephra, and hence forms an important offshore late Quaternary stratigraphic horizon.

Deep currents such as the Pacific Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) are strengthened periodically in Milankovitch cycles. We studied periodic fluctuations in seismic reflection pattern and reflection amplitude in order to detect cycles in the sedimentary layers of Bounty Trough and bounty fan, east of New Zealand. There, the occurrence of the obliquity frequency is caused only by the DWBC. Therefore, it provides direct evidence for the spatial extent of the DWBC. We can confirm the extent of the DWBC west of the outer sill, previously only inferred via erosional features at the outer sill. Further, our data allow an estimation of the extent of the DWBC into the Bounty Trough, limiting the DWBC presence to east of 178.15°E. Using the presented method a larger dataset will allow a chronological and areal mapping of sedimentation processes and hence provide information on glacial/interglacial cycles.

Geometry and development of glacial continental margin depositional systems in the Bellingshausen Sea

Ž. We present multi-channel seismic MCS reflection profiles and bathymetry data acquired across a remote and poorly surveyed part of the Antarctic continental margin in the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas. This new information has been combined with published data and used to interpret the style of sedimentation on the continental shelf, slope and rise, and to describe sedimentation processes which have been active in this region. Most seismic reflection profiles crossing the continental margin show prograded sequences beneath the outer shelf and upper slope, and we infer that the stratal characteristics of these sequences indicate that grounded ice sheets reached the shelf edge during previous glacial times. Although there are general similarities in stratal geometry on these profiles, in detail, they reveal significant longitudinal variations in sediment input from the shelf to the upper slope. On several profiles, we found evidence of mass wasting of the continental slope in the form of slump and debris flow deposits. At greater depth, turbidity flows, bottom currents and Coriolis force have controlled the further transportation and deposition of sediment, which has resulted in the development of mounds, channels and sediment wave fields. The distribution, and variations in the size and geometry of the mounds reflect sediment input and the relative contribution of these other factors which control sedimentation on the continental rise. q
