Evolution of holonic control architectures towards Industry 4.0: A short overview

Abstract: The flexibility claimed by the next generation production systems induces a deep modification of the behavior and the core itself of the control systems. Overconnectivity and data management abilities targeted by Industry 4.0 paradigm enable the emergence of more flexible and reactive control systems, based on the cooperation of autonomous and connected entities in the decision making process. For the last 20 years, holonic paradigm has become the core paradigm of those evolutions, and evolved in itself. This … Show more

“…PROSA (Product-Resource-Order-Staff Architecture), proposed by Van Brussel et al [7], is one of the most widespread holonic architectures for manufacturing systems [12]. It is the starting point for most other holonic architectures [18], and is composed of three types of Holon: Order Holon, product Holon, and resource Holon (to which the staff Holon can be added). The Product Holon corresponds to information about products and processes, as designed (e.g., product life cycle, user requirements, design, process plans, bill of materials, quality assurance procedures).…”

“…By using intelligent infrastructure components which interact with mobile devices, products and individuals, a conscious infrastructure will better support complexity and enable more efficient manufacturing of goods. 10,38 Intelligent infrastructure is also helping to improve the utilization of intelligent devices and equipment towards design of products and to manufacture them more efficiently and with less damage in terms of production waste. This is accomplished by the plant-floor OT and businesslevel IT, which are characteristics of intelligent infrastructure.…”
