In Burkina Faso, pests are the main constraint to tomato production because they can cause a complete loss of yields. To protect their crops, producers use extensively chemical pesticides. However, this method can be ineffective and creates collateral effects on public health and on environment. To mitigate this problem, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) trials based on tomato crop in association with basil, garlic or onion were compared with the usual practices of producers in field trials in 2017. The tomato-onion association provided both the best protection of the fruits and the highest yield (3 kg / m²) compared with peasant and other IPM practices. No pesticide residue was detected in samples (tomatoes and soils) from IPM practices. However, several active substances (profenofos, lambda-cyhalothrin and chlorpyrifos-ethyl) were detected in samples from farmers' practices. Only chlorpyrifos-ethyl showed a residue level above its Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) in tomatoes (360% of MRL), without acute intoxication risk for consumers according to the calculations of the Predictable Short Term Intake (PSTI). Awareness-raising and producer training on the better agricultural and phytosanitary practices are necessary to protect public health and environment against adverse effects of pesticides in Burkina Faso.

In order to contribute to cotton cultivation sustainability in west central Côte d'Ivoire, a phytosanitary diagnostic study was conducted in 11 plots. It consisted of monitoring the sanitary condition of 10 rural plots and an experiment plot set up at the Research Farm of University Jean Lorougnon Guédé of Daloa according to the regular and careful inspection of cotton seed germination, seedling health and cotton plants throughout the growing season. The results obtained indicated that the cotton varieties used by farmers had very low germination with maximum number of healthy seedlings of 43.75 % in an experiment condition. Highest number of infected seedlings (24-51%) showing characteristic symptoms of seedling blight leading to their death was observed. Under cultivation, a variety of pests was identified on cotton plants. The most important were Bemisia tabaci, Jacobiella fasciali, Helicoverpa armigera, Dysdercus sp, Earias sp, Zonocerus Variegatus, Haritalodes derogata. The Species Zonocerus Variegatus and Haritalodes derogata proved to be devastating on the experimental plot where 100% loss was recorded. The main disease observed at flowering stages in cotton plants was cotton virescence disease. Although lowly infection were observed (0.11 -0.35%) cotton cultivation monitoring and management must be set up so as to prevent its expansion in the west central. Theses finding gives useful information to farmers to reduce cotton yield losses in west central Côte d'Ivoire.Int. J. Appl. Sci. Biotechnol. Vol 6(2): 152-157

Une étude a été réalisée à la station de recherche sur les cultures vivrières du CNRA de Bouaké en vue de déterminer les performances agronomiques de quinze (15) nouvelles lignées de tomate. Ces lignées ont été évaluées, selon un dispositif en blocs de Fisher avec trois répétitions. Les observations et mesures ont porté en autres sur le développement végétatif, les stades phénologiques et le rendement. Les résultats obtenus ont révélé une variabilité entre les lignées pour l'état végétatif et la hauteur des plants. La taille des plants a varié entre 41 et 62 cm. La plus grande taille a été produite par la lignée TM41/14EW. L'étude de la phénologie a montré que le délai de floraison a varié entre 52 et 63 jours après le semis (JAS) et celui de la première récolte a été compris entre 96 et 101 JAS. Pour ces paramètres, TM39/14EW, TM47/14EW et TM48/15BF ont été tardives. L'évaluation des rendements a permis de noter que les lignées TM44/14EW, TM40/14EW, TM43/4EW et TM42/14EW ont été les plus productives avec un rendement moyen de plus de 30 t/ha. Les lignées TM40/14EW et TM43/14EW ont produit des nombres élevés de fruits par plant et qui ont été les plus fermes. A l'issue de cette étude, il est à noter que les objectifs ont été atteints car des lignées à hauts rendements et à fruits fermes s'adaptant bien aux conditions climatiques de la Côte d'Ivoire ont été identifiées. En conséquence, la confirmation en milieu paysan de lignées telles que TM40/14EW, TM43/14EW et TM44/14EW devrait être envisagée.
