Evolution and early government responses to COVID-19 in South America

Abstract: Highlights Four categories of countries can be identified based on suppression strategy measures and testing and tracing policies. Uruguay and Paraguay have managed to contain the pandemic, while Brazil and Peru appear to be overwhelmed in mid-May. The pressure on the health systems is evaluated with early projections and a novel burden index.
