Evidence of Knowledge Acquisition in a Cognitive Flexibility-Based Computer Learning Environment

Abstract: Background-A computer-based learning experience was developed using cognitive flexibility theory to overcome the pitfalls often encountered in existing medical education. An earlier study (not published) showed significant pretest-posttest increase in scores, as well as a significant positive correlation between choosing to complete the module individually or in pairs. Method-This experience was presented as part of a second-year course in medical school with randomized assignment for students to complete the … Show more

“…Building on other theories and his own empirical research he has developed the Theory of Multimedia Learning, and about a dozen Principles of Multimedia Instruction (Mayer 2009). Other relevant theories come from the constructivist approach such as cognitive flexibility theory, which has been applied across health professions education (Loving 1993;Heath et al 2008), the Systems Approach Model (Dick 1978), and Cognitive Load Theory (Sweller 1988). There remains a great need for clarification studies of CAI applications and strategies to understand how and why they work and establish clearer roles for their use (Cook et al 2008).…”

“…Tacit knowledge includes the following: Self-specific knowledge, which is specific to self-motivation and regulation [35]. Special knowledge of managing others, which is related to relationships and social interactions [36]. Knowledge of task management, including knowledge related to planning, monitoring and evaluation of various activities [37].…”

“…Scenario based on the case: In this type, multiple cases related to the topic of the lesson are presented and trained by the learners. This type is based on presenting a variety of cases within a scenario, and students work in small groups according to the scenario to solve the problem presented in it [40]. 3.…”
