Evidence of Carboxyl Modification of Hydrogen-Free Diamond-Like Carbon Films Assisted by Radio Frequency Plasma in Vacuum

Abstract: Modification of hydrogen-free diamond-like carbon (DLC) is presented, with acrylic acid (AA) vapor carried into a vacuum chamber by argon and with the in situ assistance of low-power radio frequency (RF) plasma at a temperature below 100°C. Measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique, the roughness (Ra) of the DLC was 1.063±0.040 nm. XPS and FT-IR spectra analysis showed that carboxyl groups were immobilized on the surface of the DLC films, with about 40% of carboxyl group area coverage. It was found t… Show more

“…3 shows FTIR spectra of samples. Contrasting FTIR spectrum of original PF with that of H 2 O 2 -treated PF, we found that for H 2 O 2 -treated PF, its peak of the C]O at 1642 cm À1 was intensied, 34 and furthermore a new peak occurred at 1740 cm À1 , which were assigned to the vibration of carboxyl groups, 35 suggesting the production of carboxyl groups on PF aer treated by hydrogen peroxide. It may be ascribed to the oxidation of hydroxyl groups on PF into carboxyl groups.…”

“…As the sputtering power increases, the entire spectrum is red-shifted from ∼285.7 to ∼284.8 eV, as indicated by the dashed lines in Figure a. Deconvolution of the C 1s spectra shows two main carbon components and small oxygen-bonded carbon groups: sp 2 carbon (CC at 284.7 eV), sp 3 carbon (C–C at 285.5 eV), alcohol (C–O at 286.1 eV), ketone (CO at 287.1 eV), and carboxyl (−COOH at 288.8 eV) . The intensities of the deconvoluted curves (integrated areas) are shown in Figure b.…”

“…Oxygen-bonded carbon species were also investigated and the presence of -COOH groups was conrmed, on the oxidized particles, through a new peak at a binding energy of 288.1 eV, in agreement with reported data. 35 The increase of the O/C ratio aer the oxidation (from 10.19% to 13.74%), as calculated from the ratio of the peak areas O(1s) to C(1s) may be also considered an additional proof of the carboxylation. Altogether, these data conrm the successful carboxylation of NDPs.…”
