Evidence map: topics, trends, and policy in the energy transitions literature

Abstract: We develop an evidence map of the academic research on energy transitions (ETs) with a focus on what that literature says about public policy for addressing climate change. In this article, the questions we ask are: What trends do we see in the topics that occur in journal articles on the energy transition? And to what extent has public policy been a focus? Where do we need or see energy transitions happening? Our approach involves: (1) using two literature databases to identify 4875 relevant ET articles over … Show more

“…As the world stands at the crossroads of a sustainable energy transition, synthesizing insights from global trends and success stories is essential for formulating effective policy recommendations (Akpan & Olanrewaju, 2023, Lu & Nemet, 2020, Pahle, et al, 2021 [4,32,41] . This paper delves into the lessons learned from the renewable energy landscape, identifies policy challenges, and emphasizes the need for adaptive and scalable solutions to propel the global shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy systems.…”

“…Topic modeling using LDA has been used to analyze media discourse and trace the social policy debates on climate change in different countries like Brazil (Benites-Lazaro et al, 2018) and US (Bohr, 2020). Lu and Nemet (2020) apply LDA on 4875 academic articles on energy transition to uncover the dominant aspects in the literature in a meta-analytical literature review, reporting the prominence of policy-related articles along with paucity of literature from developing countries. The findings of such studies highlight the significance of these techniques in analyzing the dominant discourses and themes, yielding new insights into the various intersections that define climate policy.…”

“…Energy transition research and studies have been largely concentrated in developed countries [4,12,28], which provide few application opportunities in developing countries [29,30]. There is also a gap in untangling socio-political factors within national energy transitions, especially one that investigates how inclusivity is being embedded in the decision-making processes.…”
