Evidence for ‘cross–talk’ between A and B chromosomes of rye

Abstract: Spontaneous DNA insertions from supernumerary B chromosomes (Bs) into the standard A chromosome complement were detected in rye (Secale cereale L.), using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis with the D1100 B-specific sequence probe. The insertions were seen in individuals derived from plants possessing deleted Bs, characterized in this study by not having the B-specific sequences that are normally found at the distal part of the long arm of the standard rye B. This result supports the case for th… Show more

“…Seeds of a rye (Secale cereale L.) self-fertile inbred line 7415 with and without Bs (Jimenez et al, 1994), hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) 'Lindstr€ om' with and without added standard rye Bs (Lindstr€ om, 1965) and rye JBK lines with truncated Bs (lacking the terminal part of the long arm) (Ribeiro et al, 2004) were germinated on wet filter papers. Plant cultivation conditions are described in Supporting Information Methods S1.…”

“…First, there is a positive correlation between genome size and the number of B chromosomes (Ayonoadu and Rees, 1971;Jones and Rees, 1982;Rosato et al, 1998;Delgado et al, 2004); by contrast, the genome size of plants with B chromosomes may in some cases be even smaller that those with no B chromosomes (Porter and Rayburn, 1990;Poggio et al, 1998). B chromosomes are, moreover, widely accepted to be derived from Achromosomes (Jones and Houben, 2003, and references therein;Leach et al, 2005) and interchanges with normal A-chromosomes have also been documented (Nokkala and Nokkala, 2004;Ribeiro et al, 2004).…”

“…Seeds of rye (Secale cereale cv JNK; 2n ¼ 2x ¼ 14 þ Bs) and wheat (Triticum aestivum cv Lindströ m; 2n ¼ 6x ¼ 42 þ Bs), both known to carry rye Bs, and a JNK rye line selected for the presence of deleted Bs (structural variants that lack the terminal part of the long arm (Ribeiro et al, 2004), were germinated on moist filter paper at 248C.…”
