Evidence for Bipolar Mood States

Abstract: Currently, the mood states are regarded as monopolar. This study tested in psychiatric subjects for the presence of five bipolar mood states after the influence of extreme response bias had been removed. The affective states hypothesized were: composed vs anxious, agreeable vs hostile, energetic vs fatigued, elated vs depressed, and clear-thinking vs confused. The sample of 303 cases included anxious, depressed and agoraphobic cases. Ratings of the 72 adjectives of the Profile of Mood States were intercorrelat… Show more

“…The VAMS happy scale scores did not decline after APTD, suggesting that, as with the VAMS depression scale scores, VAMS happy scale scores measure only large changes in mood. Alternatively, although there is evidence that the precise dimensions measured by the POMS are bipolar (Lorr et al 1982), the dimensions measured by the VAMS may not be bipolar.…”

“…At baseline, before ingesting the AA mixture, subjects completed the BDI, the bipolar Profile of Mood States (POMS; Lorr et al 1982;McNair et al 1988), and a visual analog mood scale (VAMS; Bond and Lader 1974). Five hours after ingestion of the mixture, the same scales were administered again.…”

“…All female subjects except one participated while in the follicular phase of their menstrual cycle. Subjective effects of amino acid drinks were measured with the bipolar profile of mood states (POMS) (Lorr et al 1982) at the time of arrival at the laboratory, immediately before the fMRI scan, and after the fMRI scan.…”

“…It is an instrument particularly well suited to the present research because of its sensitivity to change in affective states. Six visual analogue scales (VAS) were derived from dimensional analysis of the 72-question, bipolar POMS questionnaire (Lorr et al 1982;McNair et al 1971;O'Connell et al 2012; O'Halloran et al 2004) (subsequently referred to as POMS-VAS). Using a VAS to evaluate current mood has been repeatedly demonstrated to be valid and reliable (e.g.…”
