Evidence-Based Supplements for the Enhancement of Athletic Performance

Abstract: A strong foundation in physical conditioning and sport-specific experience, in addition to a bespoke and periodized training and nutrition program, are essential for athlete development. Once these underpinning factors are accounted for, and the athlete reaches a training maturity and competition level where marginal gains determine success, a role may exist for the use of evidence-based performance supplements. However, it is important that any decisions surrounding performance supplements are made in conside… Show more

“…The outcome was a comprehensive review of the evidence relating to the potential benefits and risks associated with supplement use 3. It was concluded, after 3 days of intensive discussion, that dietary supplements are a legitimate part of the high-performance athlete’s preparation that, when used appropriately, can play a role in maintaining good health,4 supporting effective training4 and optimising performance in competition 5. It was also recognised, however, that the evidence for the efficacy of many of the supplements used by athletes is limited and that even where some evidence does exist, little is derived from studies of elite athletes and few studies have used experimental models that resemble sporting contests 6.…”

“…10 So far, the advantages of increasing tissue creatine (and, consequently, phosphocreatine) content through exogenous supplementation has T A B L E 1 Creatine content in some foods (quantities refer to raw foods, cooking causes some creatine degradation) been exploited mainly in the sports and bodybuilding, with creatine being massively consumed by athletes and bodybuilders to augment muscle power and volume. 11,13 Besides its well-known use by sportsmen and bodybuilders, creatine supplementation has been advocated in numerous pathological or physiological conditions, as a way to increase tissue energy with the goal of correcting symptoms of diseases or improving performance under specific conditions. Initially, experimental data suggested that creatine supplementation may improve the outcome of brain hypoxia or ischemia.…”
