This study conceptualizes and validates a framework for quality management for the long-term viability of small and medium-sized firms. The study's premise is that the government and academia in South Africa are becoming more interested in the small business sector as a means of fostering economic development and job creation. This study analyzed the country's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are crucial to the generation of jobs in the construction sector as well as other parts of the South African economy. To understand the SMEs in the sector, a conceptual framework for quality management was created with a clear connection between the components. Sixty (60) SMEs participated in a self-administered questionnaire that was used to gather the data. The measurement and structural models were evaluated using the Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) method. The study's findings demonstrate that quality management positively influences SMEs sustainability.

Industry 4.0 mainly focuses on the application of modern technologies (digitalization) and the changing role of human beings (digital transformation) in modern production and logistics systems. Besides the basic principles of digitalization, interconnectivity, and autonomization, the importance of human-centered decision-making processes, such as the selection of strategic suppliers, is also increasing, as complex, novel, and unstructured decisions cannot be fully computerized. In this context, there is still a lack of understanding of which formal patterns in the strategic supplier selection process will lead to better supplier performance. Until now, most of the literature emphasizes a minor number of process-related factors in the strategic supplier selection process leading to limited support for the individual decision-maker. This study introduces a cause-effect model that extends prior research by investigating the impact of process formality, as a comprehensive measurement construct of target-, information-, organization-, and heuristics-related process factors in the strategic supplier selection process on supplier performance and purchaser satisfaction. Based on the usage of variancebased structural equation modeling in a large-scale field study, a significant relationship between process formality and supplier performance as well as between process formality and purchaser satisfaction is substantiated.

The successful implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies is dependent on a variety of complex endogenous and/or exogenous influencing factors. In this context, the realignment of contemporary teaching and learning methods is seen as a major prerequisite for the systematic development of human factors in modern and hyper-dynamic working environments. This paper focuses on the investigation of challenge-based learning as one of the most promising interactive methods for industrial engineering education. After reviewing current research on challenge-based learning, two exemplary challenges are presented in the form of a case study to serve as a foundation for the systematic development of transdisciplinary competences for the engineers and entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
