Everything about genes: Some results on the dynamics of genomics research

Abstract: In this study some novel indicators and publication data resources are explored to study the dynamics of genomics research at three different levels: worldwide; national and at individual Research Centers. Our results indicate that the growth of genomics research worldwide seems to be stabilizing, whereas genomics research in the Netherlands aims at getting 'ready for the next step'. As we find differences in research dynamics at the level of individual Research Centers, governmental support in a 'next step' c… Show more

“…Using a different methodology, Boyack, Klavans & Börner (2005) found that in somewhat more than 50% of the cases the ISI categories corresponded closely with the clusters based on inter-journal citation relations. These results accord with the expectation: many journals can be assigned unambiguous affiliations in one core set or another, but the remainder which is also a large group is very heterogeneous (Bradford, 1934;Garfield, 1972).…”

“…Recently, Braam (2007) proposed using "journal scope change" in the publication profile of research programs and/or research groups as an indicator for intellectual growth. However, this begs the question of how to calibrate change at the level of a group against change at the level of relevant fields (Whitley, 1984;Bonaccorsi, 2005).…”

“…Scientometrics, which studies scientific information, can detect trends and biases within a given field of scientific research through analysis of its body of scientific literature. Many studies have used scientometrics to assess the characteristics and the future direction of a field of scientific research (4,5).…”
