Evapotranspiration mapping for agricultural water management: An overview

Abstract: Evapotranspiration (ET) is an essential component of the water balance. Any attempt to improve water use efficiency must be based on reliable estimates of ET, which includes water evaporation from land and water surfaces and transpiration by vegetation. ET varies regionally and seasonally according to weather and wind conditions. Remote sensing based agro-meteorological models are presently most suited for estimating crop water use at both field and regional scales. Numerous ET algorithms have been developed t… Show more

“…Accurate estimate of evapotranspiration (ET) in agricultural communities in sub-Sahara Africa is important for the prudent use of water resources for agricultural purposes and the ever growing rural population [1]. ET being the sum of water movement from both plants and the soil to the atmosphere is a critical factor in agricultural decision, if agricultural activities are to have a significant impact on the economies of rural communities [2,3].…”

“…Soil moisture and vegetation are key parameters in land-atmosphere interactions [1,2]. As the sum of soil evaporation and canopy transpiration, evapotranspiration (ET) plays a significant role in determining the exchanges of energy and mass between the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere [3]. Therefore, ET monitoring is important in various disciplines, such as land surface modelling, global circulation models, irrigation systems, hydrology, and water resources management [4].…”

“…Results showed significant correlation with NDVI real content at 99% confidence level. The objective of this paper is to map VI (NDVI and LAI) through Remote sensing data set of LANDSAT-7ETM+ for estimating evapotranspiration on regional basis for water management (Kumar et al, 2013;Bala et al, 2015).…”
