An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of water stress on yield and various physiological parameters, including the crop water stress index for tomatoes in the Central Anatolian region of Turkey. For this purpose, the irrigation schedule used in this study includes 120%, 100%, 80%, and 60% (I120, I100, I80, I60) of evaporation from the gravimetrically. Water deficit was found to cause a stress effect in tomato plants, which was reflected in changes in plants’ morphological and pomological function (such as stem diameter, fruit weight, pH, titratable acidity, and total soluble solids). Irrigation levels had a significant effect on the total yield of tomatoes. The lowest water use efficiency (WUE) was obtained from the I60, while the highest WUE was found in the I100 irrigation level. The CWSI was calculated using an empirical approach from measurements of infrared canopy temperatures, ambient air temperatures, and vapor pressure deficit values for four irrigation levels. The crop water stress index (CWSI) values ranged from −0.63 to a maximum value of 0.53 in I120, from −0.27 to 0.63 in I100, from 0.06 to 0.80 in I80, and from 0.37 to 0.97 in I60. There was a significant relation between yield and CWSI. The yield was correlated with mean CWSI values, and the linear equation Total yield = −2398.9CWSI + 1240.4 can be used for yield prediction. The results revealed that the CWSI value was useful for evaluating crop water stress in tomatoes and predicting yield.

Introducción. Conocer la diversidad a nivel genético, químico y morfológico que existe entre individuos y poblaciones, es de gran utilidad en los programas de mejoramiento genético, ya que facilita la organización del material y la selección adecuada de genotipos superiores para el desarrollo de una población mejorada. Objetivo. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue caracterizar genética, química y agronómicamente líneas avanzadas de tomate de cáscara (Physalis ixocarpa Brot.), del programa de mejoramiento de hortalizas del Campo Experimental Bajío (CE-Bajío) del Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias (INIFAP), México. Materiales y métodos. Durante la temporada primavera-verano y otoño-invierno de 2017, se cuantificó la variabilidad genética con marcadores moleculares de ADN de tipo AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism); se determinaron los compuestos fenólicos y tomatidina en fruto, y en lo agronómico el porcentaje de germinación, número de frutos por planta, peso del fruto, diámetro ecuatorial y polar, y el rendimiento. Resultados. Se obtuvo un promedio general de similitud entre los genotipos de 0,86. De acuerdo con las relaciones genéticas, se detectaron las líneas 4 y 70 como posibles progenitores de híbridos y un patrón geográfico en los agrupamientos. La diversidad química indicó que el mayor contenido de flavonoides (51,1 mg EAG/100 g) se presentó en la L-86, de fenoles y antocianinas (396, 8 y 7,22 mg EAG/100 g, resp.) en la L-182, y de taninos (188,4 mg EAG/100 g) en la L-97, mientras que la tomatidina fue mayor en frutos verdes (2,23-3,81 mg EAG/100 g) que en morados. El intervalo de rendimiento de las líneas fue de 11,4 a 47,6 t/ha, donde el 20% de las líneas superaron la media de rendimiento nacional (40 t/ha). Se destacó la L-37 con 47,6 t/ha, que además produjo mayor número de frutos por planta, diámetro ecuatorial y polar, y una tasa de germinación de 93,3%. Conclusión. Las líneas 37, 25, 27 y 167, tienen potencial para ser validadas para uso comercial y como líneas parentales.

Adequate and timely irrigation based on real-time monitoring of crop water status is critical for efficient and sustainable water use. However, detection of water status in large crop fields is not a trivial task as manual inspection can be time consuming and costly. Moreover, the symptoms of water stress are visually detectable only after the crops are already in a significantly water deficient stage. Consequently, capability of monitoring water status in crops on a regular basis could maximize productivity and water use efficiency. As an indicator, the crop water stress index (CWSI) has been widely used to estimate water status in the crop fields. CWSI can be derived from ground-based leaf temperature measurements, however, airborne or UAVborne high-resolution thermal sensing provides a superior platform to cover large regions within a short time window. In this paper, UAV-borne thermal sensing was conducted to map plant water stress and spatial variability in water control and deficit plots over 1 ha of a nectarine orchard at an altitude of 100 m from ground level. Targets of ground control points (GCPs) were designed to suit the image spatial resolution as well as the visibility in the thermal infrared spectral range. The target was made of aluminium body marked with a black cross, which can be detected as a cool object in the thermal infrared image due to its low emissivity. Thermal infrared images were post-processed to generate single temperature-based orthomosaic image for the entire study field. CWSI map was computed using canopy temperatures at the centre of canopies from the mosaic image. Histogram analysis was used to estimate the lower boundary temperature (Twet), representing the temperature of fully transpiring leaves. The upper boundary temperature (T dry) was determined by air temperature + 6 ⁰C. Ground measurements of midday stem water potential (SWP) and stomatal conductance (g c) were collected concurrently with UAV operation and used to correlate the thermal measurement to crop biophysical parameters. Results showed that CWSI was in good agreement with both SWP and g c with determination coefficients (R 2) of 0.92 and 0.97, respectively. Thus, remotely estimated CWSI from a UAV platform can play an important role in effective mapping of spatial variability of nectarine water stress and subsequently in optimal management of irrigation.
