The aim of the study was screening fourteen hybrids of maize under normal and drought stress. A field trial was carried out during two summer seasons on an experimental farm, Ismailia, Egypt. Growth, yield physiological traits have been estimated. Indices of drought resistance were calculated for each hybrid; mean productivity, drought susceptibility index, tolerance index, geometric mean productivity and yield stability index. Simple sequence repeat analysis of DNA (SSR) was applied to estimate the genetic differentiation among the hybrids. Results showed that corn yields were significantly reduced during drought conditions. Maize hybrids exhibited significant differences for physiological and quantitative traits; plant height, number of leaves, ear height, ear diameter, ear length, relative water content (RWC) and chlorophyll content. In this study, the hybrids divided successfully into four groups according to their drought tolerance and yield production by using drought resistance indices. One of these groups; S.C128, S.C162, S.C167 and S.C176 hybrids had the highest yield under both conditions and more adaptive under drought stress. The results of the SSR analysis showed that polymorphism % was ranged from 50 to 67% with an average 58.5%, while polymorphism information content (PIC) values were ranged from 0.32 to 0.57. Genetic similarity coefficient values were ranged from 0.625 to 1.000 with an average of 0.8125. The study concluded that SSR analysis and drought indices results are quite similar. Thermal images were more effective for selecting maize hybrids for drought stress. Consequently; we recommended it to use in plant breeding experiment.

Stress is any physiological, physical or chemical change that leads to disturbance and imbalance in the plant. Water stress is one of the most important environmental stresses affecting plant growth and production. It is also known as the lack of available water in the soil to be absorbed by the plant at a stage of its growth, or the inability of the plant. On the absorption of water even if it is naturally present in the root environment due to the force affecting the holding of water molecules, as it was described as the state in which the amount of water absorbed by the roots is less than the water lost through transpiration from the vegetative system, meaning that it is the state in which the effort The water content of the plant and the fullness of its cells is low to a degree that affects the conduct of vital and physiological processes. During the occurrence of water stress, as the term “drought” is not accurate in the sense used, but it is sometimes expressed as the phenomenon of water shortage as a result of climatic elements of multiple weather conditions, As for the agricultural concept of drought (Agricultural Drought), it is according to the growth and formation of the crop, and it is assumed that it begins when the ready water is drained from the root zone, plant goes through three stages: First stage increases the water loss and the transpiration process until it reaches a point where the amount of water lost by transpiration exceeds the amount of water absorbed by the roots. On the water balance between these two processes in adaptation, and when the water stress intensifies, the plant moves to the third stage, after which the plants lose a large part of the water through transpiration, the stomata are closed and the photosynthesis process stops. Therefore water stress (drought) alone is one of the most influential environmental stresses in reducing maize productivity, Therefore, the role of the plant breeder came through the implementation of breeding programs for hybridization and selection until it obtains a plant adapted to drought through the occurrence of morphological changes that make plants phenotypically adaptable to conditions of lack of water and includes an increase in root size and reduction of leaf area.

Effect of Irrigation Intervals on Growth, Productivity and Quality of Some Yellow Maize Genotypes

Increasing irrigation intervals from 12 up to 17 and 22 days significantly decreased number and area of leaves and leaves, stem and total dry weight/plant, total chlorophyll, relative water content (RWC), plant height, length and diameter of ear, number and weight of grains/ear, 100 grain weight as well as grain, stover and biological yields/fed, protein and oil % and yields/ fed, but significantly increased proline content in leaves in both seasons. 2-S.C 168 G surpassed the other genotypes in area and dry weight of leaves/plant, grain yield/fed, crop and harvest indices as well as protein yield/fed. T.W.C 368 G was superior in stem and total dry weight/plant, plant height, ear diameter, no.of grains/ear,100-grain weight as well as stover and biological yields/fed. However, S.C 168 G and T.W.C 368 G recorded the best values of RWC, no.of ears/plant, grain weight/ear, protein% and oil yield/fed as compared with the other genotypes. The highest significant values of proline content and no.of leaves/ plant were obtained by T.W.C 352 G and T.W.C 360 G, respectively in both seasons. 3-Maize genotypes S.C 168 as well as T.W.C 360 and T.W.C 352 under I 2 and T.W.C 368 under either I 2 or I 3 had the lowest values of relative yield reduction and drought suS.Ceptibility index (< 1), indicating that those genotypes are relatively drought tolerant genotypes compared to other tested genotypes in our experiment condition.
