Summary This paper deals with a nonlinear control of a wind energy conversion system (WECS) based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) interconnected to the distribution grid. The system connected to the grid is achieved by two IGBT based back‐to‐back converters controlled by pulse width modulation (PWM) and a capacitor as a DC link between them. Firstly, a literature review on the recent studies of nonlinear control in the wind energy field is introduced. Subsequently, a complete description of the wind energy conversion system with its dynamic modeling is presented. The second part of this article focused on the proposed control laws that rely on backstepping control as well as the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) command. The main objective of the control is to optimize the extraction of the wind power in the presence of a real wind profile and to keep the PMSG working properly with the best performance in both static and dynamic modes. The wind profile of this simulation is measured from the Dakhla region in Morocco to test the system robustness against real conditions. The simulation analysis prove the validation of the control strategy using a 2‐MW wind turbine and showed that the backstepping control based on the Lyapunov stability technique offers excellent results in terms of THD rate that does not exceed 0.95%.

In this study, a techno‐economic feasibility study of off‐grid hybrid power systems is performed for a rural area, which is located at a significant distance from the grid connection in Bushehr province of Iran, beside the Persian Gulf. HOMER simulation software is used to determine the economic feasibility of the systems. The simulations were focused on net present cost which includes cost of energy (COE) and renewable fraction of the hybrid configurations. The results indicate that the wind/PV/diesel/battery hybrid renewable system configuration is the optimum system, primarily based on COE and achieving a 61.4% renewable energy fraction. The proposed hybrid power system not only exhibits better performance in fuel consumption but also reduces carbon dioxide emissions. It could mitigate the emission of 664 tons of greenhouse gases to the local atmosphere of the village, as well as other air pollution emissions, which could offer substantial benefit to both residence and environment. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis shows that a rise in fuel prices will derive more demand for alternative energy sources. For instance, when the fuel price is more than $0.5/L, the optimal energy option would be the wind/PV/battery system. In that case, it is no longer economical to use the diesel generator and renewable energy penetration becomes 100%. © 2019 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 38:e13146, 2019

The main objective of this study is to improve the energy quality extracted by variable speed wind turbine based on doubly fed induction generator. First, the dynamic modeling of different parts of the system is presented. The electrical machine is modeled in PARK reference frame. Thereafter, the control technique is detailed. Indirect field‐oriented control with fuzzy logic controllers (FLC) is used to control the rotor currents and consequently the real and reactive powers of the stator generator. Then, the design of FLC is detailed by tuning its most significant parameters, which are scaling factor rules base and membership functions. Finally, a simulation using the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment is carried out to prove the validation of the control strategy using a 2 MW wind turbine. The results show a satisfactory performance in terms of rapidity, stability, and precision under variable wind speed conditions.
