Evaluation of Weight Loss Indicators and Laparoscopic One-Anastomosis Gastric Bypass Outcomes

Abstract: Mini-gastric bypass/One-anastomosis gastric bypass (MGB-OAGB) is an effective bariatric technique for treating overweight and obesity, controlling and improving excess-weight-related comorbidities. Our study evaluated OAGB characteristics and resulting weight evolution, plus surgical success criteria based on various excess weight loss indicators. A prospective observational study of 100 patients undergoing OAGB performed by the same surgical team (two-year follow-up). Surgical characteristics were: surgery du… Show more

“…MGB is a safe and alternative procedure for LRYGB that has been demonstrated to be effective in weight loss and in resolving metabolic complications. 2,4,6,9,10 The purpose of MGB is to enable a longer feeling offullness" after eating, both by reducing the stomach volume and by ensuring that foods are transferred to the terminal ileum faster with the modulation of intestinal hormones. Its advantages over LRYGB are that it is a single anastomosis and a relatively simpler procedure.…”

“…3 According to WHO data, in 2014, 39% of adults were overweight, and 13% were morbid obesity. 4 Obesity increases the risk of many systemic diseases and mortality. 5 Due to failures in conservative treatment, surgery is becoming increasingly popular for the treatment of morbid obesity.…”

“…One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB), is one of the bariatric surgeries of malabortive type accepted by IFSO with effective long-term results in weight loss and associated comorbidities 7 . The results in weight reduction can be interpreted in absolute terms as weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) 8 . Other internationally accepted relative terms to describe success in weight loss after surgery are the percentage of Excess of BMI Lost (%EBMIL), which defines the success of a surgery in values greater than 50% 8 , 9 .…”
