Evaluation of Water Scarcity in Selected Countries of the Middle East

Abstract: The primary goal of this article is to evaluate water scarcity in selected countries of the Middle-East and assess the impact on agricultural production. To begin with, the Weighted Anomaly Standardized Precipitation (WASP) Index from 1979 to 2017 was spatially computed for Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. In order to demonstrate the effect of reduced levels of water, the water shortage situation in cities with the population higher than one million was examined. This was accomplished by utilizing the Composite In… Show more

“…Droughts cause drying up of surface and subsurface water bodies and make a vast population of the country under water stress (Shahi, 2019). The drought of 1999-2001 caused 20 million people under severe water storage (Procházka et al, 2018). An increasing population of insects and pests has been reported during droughts which cause the outbreak of diseases (Hosseini et al, 2009).…”

“…With regard to agriculture policy, state policies in supporting agriculture entrepreneur education and innovation can pave the way for increased exports through its increased value addition [54][55][56], and higher market share value [57]. Furthermore, improved technology can enable increased water capacity, which is a catalyst for healthy, arable, and pastoral growth, making it possible for nations to export agriculture products which are of international standards [56,58].…”

“…This enables evaluating the water resources vulnerability and scarcity of this region. For instance, [38] evaluated water scarcity in the Middle East using the WASP-Index. Concerning the wet events, it is shown a decrease in the intensity, duration, and frequency of occurrence of the 12m-WASP intermediate-to-severe wet events.…”
