Evaluation of Water Quality of Local Streams at Gandhamardan Iron Mines, Suakati, Keonjhar District of Odisha, India

Abstract: The present study focused on assessing the water quality by using water quality index (WQI) of six streams located surrounding iron ore mine of Suakati area of Keonjhar District of Odisha, which includes the physicochemical analysis of fourteen parameters: pH, colour, total dissolved solids (TDS), dissolve oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total hardness (TH), chloride (Cl -), nitrate (NO 3 -), oil & grease (O&G), sulphate (SO 4 2-), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), fluoride (F -) and arsenic(As). The WQ… Show more

“…The DO values in the first and second measurement series were lower than the standards. In the first series, in which <300 in the total number of microorganisms was at 22 ± 2 • C, the DO value was lower, suggesting that the bacteria consumed surrounding oxygen [41].…”

“…Frequent explosions, transportation of ores and dumping of waste from the mining industry also disturb the tranquility of elephant habitats. Additionally, pollution and drying up of perennial streams (Harichandan et al, 2017) cause elephants to move away from their native territory in search of water. Consequently, elephants are attracted toward easily accessible sources of food and water in the nearby villages, which is leading to frequent conflict with the human society in this landscape.…”

“…For certain rivers, water quality is the result of a few parameters that are interconnected with local and temporal variations influenced by water flow rates throughout the year. Kauffman [3] stated that water quality has been impaired by nutrient pollution but has recovered in the last several decades and Harichandan et al [4] support that the surface water quality in the region is governed by both natural processes such as rainfall rates, weather processes and man-made activities such as urban, industrial and agricultural activities as well as exploitation of human resources.…”
