Evaluation of various feedback mechanisms in relation to compliance by adult patients with oral home care instructions

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect on oral hygiene and gingival health of plaque scoring and the performance of a 'tooth brushing test" at each visit during initial periodontal treatment. A total of 63 adult periodontal patients (22-67 years of age) was allocated to 4 matched groups: Brushing test group (B), open scoring group (O), minimal feedback group (M) and control group (C). The oral hygiene instruction for groups B, O and M was provided by handing out a self-educational manual on… Show more

“…This observation corroborates previous results in patients subjected to such a tooth brushing test (Glavind et al, 1983). The lack of effect on the gingival bleeding scores suggests that a tooth brushing test may motivate the patients to clean their teeth better immediately prior to the examination but not on a regular daily basis.…”

“…The reduced plaque formation, noted by an improvement in the PI values for the test and control sites over the study time, likely resulted from improved gingival health following the MWF, the reinforcement of oral hygiene instructions given to the study subjects postsurgically, in addition to the improved oral hygiene routines commonly observed in study subjects [45,46]. However, comparing the test and control sites continued to show a nonsignificant difference regarding their PI values.…”

“…In the teaching of plaque control, no more than 2 oral hygiene aids at a time were introduced, an approach which has been widely recommended in order to avoid patient confusion because of an initially too extensive dental health education. The sttidents were also made aware that repetition of dental health education, in parlicular reinforcement of oral hygiene instructions, might have a dampening effect on motivation both for the patient and the therapist and so reduce the effect of the preventive education (Hamp & .lohansson 1982, Glavind et al 1983). Also, there may be a risk of an undesirable dependency of the patient on the therapist, undermining ihe preventive behavior of the palient (Slieiham 1983).…”
