Evaluation of ultrasonographic angle and linear parameters in the diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip

Abstract: Angle parameters proposed by Graf and linear parameters introduced by Morin are the most common currently in use for quantification and classification of ultrasonographic findings in the diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip. The aim of this study was to determine which of the two parameters is more suited to routine clinical use. Investigation was carried out on 100 hips of 50 infants by the same examiner who obtained two separate sonograms for each hip. Based on the results of our study, angle para… Show more

“…Sonographic measurements of anatomical specimens in a water bath demonstrated comparable reproducibility for the two methods [23] but only a few clinical studies have been published to date [24-26]. Czubak [25] and Falliner [24] found a significant correlation (p < 0.01) between the α-angle and the FHC.…”

“…6,7 Next to Graf’s method of quantification other methods and techniques have been published, however, there is no consensus about the most adequate method for quantification and classification of DDH. 4,8 The most commonly used methods for evaluation and quantification are the methods according to Graf and Morin and Terjesen. 7-10 Graf’s method focuses on acetabular morphology, measuring the angle of acetabular inclination (α-angle) and the acetabular roof angle (β-angle).…”

“…The acetabular cartilage complex lays down a cartilaginous template that becomes ossified. 16 We measured the coverage of the femoral head by the cartilaginous acetabular mass with an inclination angle that was similar to osseous acetabulum measurement by the a-angle. [9][10][11] Angular parameters that determine the relationship between the osseous and cartilaginous part of the acetabulum are more suitable for screening acetabular development.…”
