Reproducibility of different screening classifications in ultrasonography of the newborn hip

Abstract: BackgroundUltrasonography of the hip has gained wide acceptance as a primary method for diagnosis, screening and treatment monitoring of developmental hip dysplasia in infants. The aim of the study was to examine the degree of concordance of two objective classifications of hip morphology and subjective parameters by three investigators with different levels of experience.MethodsIn 207 consecutive newborns (101 boys; 106 girls) the following parameters were assessed: bony roof angle (α-angle) and cartilage roo… Show more

“…Peterlein et al [50] examined 207 newborns with both the Terjesen and Graf techniques and investigated the inter-and intra-observer reliability for the measurements of alpha angle, beta angle and femoral head coverage (FHC). They found better reliability for the alpha angle, followed by the beta angle and finally by the FHC, regardless of the experience level of the investigator.…”

“…Peterlein et al . 17 performed a similar study, in which ultrasonography was performed on each newborn by three investigators with different levels of experience. Interestingly, they found no statistically significant difference between investigators measurements even when the experience levels were highly different from each other.…”

“…However, the strength is the performance of the ultrasonography evaluation of the same infant by four different clinicians. The few similarly designed studies that have been performed in the past involved much fewer 14 15 16 17 clinicians.…”
