“…RTN (road traffic noise) in the most impacting noise source of the modern lifestyle (Ruiz-Padillo et al 2016 ). Although the parameters influencing the emission of noise usually considered include vehicle engines and flow composition, studies have also established “acoustic impedance of road surfaces” (Bianco et al 2020 ; Praticò et al 2021 ), “type of vehicle tyres” (Licitra et al 2017 ), “pavement ageing” (Teti et al 2020 ), and “pavement texture and material” (Praticò and Anfosso-Lédée 2012 ; Praticò 2014 ; Del Pizzo et al 2020 ; de León et al 2020 ) as other important parameters that should be considered.…”

“…Besides engine noise, tire/road interaction-also known as tire/road noise-is the main generation mechanism acting in the speed range cars usually have in urban and suburban contexts [16]. Tire/road noise depends on both the tire model [17] and the type of road surface [18,19], since the effect of its properties such as road texture [20][21][22] and its job mix formula [23,24] can be considered when optimizing pavements from an acoustic point of view. Low-noise pavements represent an effective tool in road traffic noise mitigation, not only because they reduce noise acting on the sound power of the source, but also because, compared to other solutions-such as ordinary noise barriers-they yield a smaller impact on the surrounding environment and on the citizens.…”

“…Other than tyres, the acoustic performance depends on various pavement characteristics including pavement texture [17] and pavement age [18]. Understanding such noise characteristics helps in devising mitigating strategies, including pavement noise reduction with use of new technologies in design and materials [19], such as rubberized asphalt [20,21]. Understanding the noise factors helps in analysing the noise profile of a specific location along with the location characteristics.…”
