Evaluation of three different point‐of‐care tests for quantitative measurement of canine C‐reactive protein

Abstract: All POCTs were able to measure cCRP, but precision, accuracy, and correlation coefficients varied among the 3 systems. Therefore, serial measurements for monitoring of cCRP in dogs should always be performed using the same POCT system.

“…In the analytic conditions selected, the LoQ of the assay was 1.4 mg/L. This value is lower than those reported for other automated immunoassays such as the Gentian cCRP assay (7 mg/L), the Life Assay (7 mg/L), and other POC systems evaluated in the literature (10–20 mg/L) . Although these comparisons have to be taken with caution, due to the lack of harmonization among the different commercially available assays, the method described here allows the quantification of samples from healthy dogs with high accuracy.…”

“…A nephelometric immunoassay for cCRP has been available in Japan for a while . More recently several other canine‐specific automated immunoassays have become commercially available, including turbidimetric immunoassays, as well as different point‐of‐care (POC) systems …”

“…Measurement of cCRP serum concentration provides valuable diagnostic information . However, the variety of methods used to quantify cCRP, such as different reagents, antibodies, controls, and standards, make a comparison of results obtained very difficult . Complete normalization of laboratory results is only achieved by employing a uniform measurement standard, using primarily the available species‐specific reference material …”
