Evaluation of the Tolerance Ability of Wheat Genotypes to Drought Stress: Dissection through Culm-Reserves Contribution and Grain Filling Physiology

Abstract: Drought stress is one of the limiting factors for grain filling and yield in wheat. The grain filling and determinants of individual grain weight depend on current assimilation and extent of remobilization of culm reserves to grains. A pot experiment was conducted with eight wheat cultivars at the Pot House to study the grain filling and the contributions of reserves in culm, including the sheath to grain yield under drought stress. Drought stress was enforced by restricting irrigation during the grain-filling… Show more

“…The mineral-nutrient relation in crops via nutrient availability, transport and portioning was also affected by drought (Nawaz et al, 2020). The grain yield, grains per spike, and 1,000-grain weight were significantly reduced under drought stress (Abid et al, 2018;Islam et al, 2021).…”

“…Thereupon, these tolerant genotypes could be utilized in wheat breeding programs for boosting grain yield under water deficit conditions. Respectively, several previous reports applied tolerance indices and cluster analysis to classify wheat genotypes under drought stress conditions [ 109 , 110 , 111 , 112 , 113 ].…”

“…5 and 6 ). Cluster analysis was used to establish genetic divergence and classification of drought tolerance in wheat by Grzesiak et al (2019) , Islam et al (2021) and Mohi-Ud-Din et al (2021) . The subsequent linear discriminant analysis exhibited that genotypes were assigned to different clusters with 98% correctness, which verified there was no significant misclassification error while clustering the genotypes ( Table 4 ).…”
