Background: Schizophrenia has been recognized as the most stigmatized mental disorder, imposing a substantial burden on affected individuals. However, no prior studies have investigated social stigma toward individuals with schizophrenia in Lebanon. Purpose: We aimed to examine three components of social stigma including knowledge, attitude, and behavior toward individuals with schizophrenia in a Lebanese population and to explore associated factors with the level of social stigma. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was administered, and data from 469 participants were gathered from January 31, 2023, to February 18, 2023. We used previously validated questionnaires to assess the knowledge, attitude (Social Distance Scale), and behavior (Reported and Intended Behavior Scale) of participants toward individuals with schizophrenia. The score for each section was calculated and used to explore the associations between sociodemographic factors and the levels of stigma in each domain. Results:The study participants had a moderate understanding of schizophrenia. However, a substantial proportion showed negative attitudes and unfavorable behaviors toward individuals with schizophrenia. We identified several sociodemographic factors associated with the knowledge, attitude, and behavior scores. Notably, a higher knowledge score and more positive attitudes were positively correlated with improved intended behaviors. Conclusion:This study highlights the pervasive stigma encompassing issues in knowledge, attitudes, and behavior surrounding schizophrenia in a Lebanese population. Our study suggests a pressing need for targeted interventions to increase public awareness and decrease the social stigma of schizophrenia in Lebanon.

Confl itos de interesse: nada a declarar. ResumoObjetivo: Avaliar a efi cácia de uma intervenção na redução das atitudes estigmatizantes e ansiedade perante o doente mental em estudantes de enfermagem.Métodos: Estudo quase experimental, realizado com uma amostra intencional de 99 estudantes de enfermagem de um instituto universitário da região centro de Portugal. No grupo de controlo, os estudantes desenvolveram o plano de ensino clínico em Enfermagem de saúde mental e psiquiátrica em serviços de psiquiatria, conforme o plano de estudos (n=50). No grupo de teste, além de cumprirem o plano de estudos, os estudantes participaram de um programa psicoeducativo dirigido ao estigma (n=49). Utilizaram-se as versões portuguesas da Mental Illness: Clinicians' Attitudes Scale (MICA-4) e AQ27 para avaliação do estigma e a Intergroup Anxiety Scale (EAI) para medir a ansiedade intergrupal.Resultados: A amostra apresenta homogeneidade de variáveis no momento inicial (p>0,05), com melhorias estatisticamente signifi cativas das atitudes estigmatizantes e redução da ansiedade perante o doente mental em ambos os grupos (p<0,005). O impacto da intervenção não foi signifi cativo, tendo o grupo de teste melhorado as atitudes estigmatizantes de medo (p=0,03) e piorado relativamente à ajuda (p= 0,04).Conclusão: Verifi cou-se um impacto positivo do ensino clínico na redução da ansiedade perante o doente mental, conduzindo a uma redução do estigma em saúde mental. A intervenção dirigida ao estigma não revelou efeitos signifi cativos no estigma global nem na ansiedade intergrupal o que aponta para a necessidade futura da sua reformulação e comparação com amostras de estudantes de outras instituições de ensino de enfermagem.

To understand how stigmatization of people diagnosed with a mental disorder occurs in secondary mental healthcare staff in mental healthcare centers in Chile was the objective of the study. A descriptive qualitative and interpretative design with an ethnographic approach was used. Participants' observations, ethnographic, and semi‐structured interviews were conducted with professionals at three secondary mental health centers. Qualitative descriptive and interpretative content analysis was used. Stigmatization of users is shaping up in their trajectory in the health center. Identity changes from person to “patient,” which generates dependence on the expert role of healthcare professionals. Stigma is expressed in the interactions between a health institution, a professional team, and a user, reproducing power and control relationships associated with the biomedical model and reinforcing a cycle of chronification in the user. Health teams are stressed by discrepancies between the current mental health policy and the user's biomedical understanding.
