Evaluation of the methodologies used to generate random pavement profiles based on the power spectral density: An approach based on the International Roughness Index

Abstract: The pavement roughness is the main variable that produces the vertical excitation in vehicles. Pavement profiles are the main determinant of (i) discomfort perception on users and (ii) dynamic loads generated at the tire-pavement interface; hence its evaluation constitutes an essential step on a Pavement Management System. The present document evaluates two specific techniques used to simulate pavement profiles; these are the shaping filter and the sinusoidal approach, both based on the Power Spectral Density.… Show more

“…where -spatial frequency (cycles/m), -reference spatial frequency (0.1 cycles/m), -pavement waviness indicator, or the exponent of the fitted PSD. For general use, the road roughness indicator usually takes the values of 1.75 < < 2.25 [61] and for ISO classification assuming constant velocity PSD, = 2. The gravel pavement profile cannot be approximated with the waviness of w = 2 used in ISO 8608, which usually occurs on paved roads [46].…”

“…AHP is a multicriteria decision-aiding method that is based on a solid axiomatic foundation. It is a systematic procedure for dealing with complex decision-making problems, in which many competing alternatives exist [37][38][39]. Thus, we adopt this method to solve the weight coefficients of the LQG controller.…”

“…where = 0 guarantees that the interpolation function of each cell does not overlap. Assume that is constant; then we can solve the parameters as follows [38]: , which are the RMS of vehicle's vertical acceleration, tire dynamic deflection, and suspension dynamic deflection, respectively. The objective weight coefficient of vertical acceleration is supposed to be 1.…”
