Evaluation of the in vitro antimicrobial activity of an ethanol extract of Brazilian classified propolis on strains of Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is one of the most frequent causes of hospital acquired infections. With the increase in multiple drug resistant strains, natural products such as propolis are a stratagem for new product discovery. The aims of this study were: to determine the in vitro antimicrobial activity of an ethanol extract of propolis; to define the MIC50 and MIC90 (Minimal Inhibitory Concentration – MIC) against 210 strains of S. aureus; to characterize a crude sample of propolis and the respective et… Show more

“…Therefore it would be interesting to develop some alternative extraction of propolis using a nontoxic solvent such as subcritical water. In addition, it should be noticed that, as an intrinsic polytherapy, propolis may also circumvent the development of drug resistance by bacteria [ 60 ].…”

“…This diversity of the chemical composition gives propolis an additional advantage as an antibacterial agent. The combination of many active ingredients and their presence in various proportions prevents the bacterial resistance from occurring [33].…”

“…3,4-dihydroxy-5-prenyl-cinnamic acid; 3,5-diprenyl-4-hydroxy-cinnamic acid [19] Table 2 depicts the chemical composition of the hydro-alcoholic extract of propolis. Flavonoids (31.9%), diterpenes (21.5%), and phenolic acid esters (16.5%) were the main groups of compounds found in this extract.…”
