We investigated the biostimulant potential of six microalgal species from Nordic collections extracted with two different procedures: thermal hydrolysis with a weak solution of sulfuric acid accompanied by ultrasonication and bead‐milling with aqueous extraction followed by centrifugation. To this aim, we designed a phenotyping pipeline consisting of a root growth assay in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, complemented with greenhouse experiments to evaluate lettuce yield (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Finstar) and photosynthetic performance. The best‐performing hydrolyzed extracts stimulated Arabidopsis root elongation by 8%–13% and lettuce yield by 12%–15%. The in situ measured photosynthetic performance of lettuce was upregulated in the efficient extracts: PSII quantum yield increased by 26%–34%, and thylakoid proton flux increase was in the range of 34%–60%. In contrast, aqueous extracts acquired by bead‐milling showed high dependence on biomass concentration in the extract and an overall plant growth enhancement was not attained in any of the applied dosages. Our results indicate that hydrolysis of the biomass can be a decisive factor for rendering effective plant biostimulants from microalgae.

Miscanthus × giganteus (M × g) is a promising energy crop in phytotechnology with biomass production. Despite considerable vegetation and harvest under varying climate conditions and across different soils, field-scale studies on utilising M × g remain scarce. Analysing the literature and our own findings, this study intends to highlight the potential of M × g phytotechnology for revitalising non-agricultural lands (NAL), including brownfields, and illustrate the expediency of applying biochar to enhance biomass yield, energy efficiency, and economic feasibility. To validate the feasibility of M × g production on brownfields, two scenarios within the value chain “biomass–biogas–electricity” for green harvest were examined. The assumptions were as follows: (1) a methane yield of 5134 m3 ha−1 y−1, and (2) substrate-specific methane yields of 247 and 283 mL (g oDM)−1 for the first and subsequent years, respectively. The findings suggest that Scenario 2 is better suited for cultivating M × g on brownfields/NAL, being more sensitive and eliminating inaccuracies and the generalisations of results. From the third year onward, the revenue of M × g production on biochar-amended brownfields showed greater potential for future profitability. Future research should confirm the positive trend in the energy efficiency ratio of M × g phytotechnology on a larger scale, particularly in real brownfield applications.

Urban greening produces a large amount of garden waste, and the pyrolysis of garden waste into biochar is an effective waste management technology. Biochar has a large specific surface area and soil remediation ability. However, the knowledge about the co-recycling of sewage sludge and garden waste biochar to improve the growth of Monstera deliciosa needs to be highlighted. Therefore, we conducted a pot experiment by applying Ficus altissima litter-derived biochar (FB) at rates of 0, 1.5, and 3.0% (w/w, CK, FB1.5, and FB3) in soil amended with sewage sludge at 50% (w/w), to improve the soil properties, and further analyzed the effects of FB on growth and heavy metals (HMs) uptake of landscape plant M. deliciosa. Results showed in comparison with control setups, the addition of 3% FB treatment in sewage sludge amended soil improved the soil properties and significantly increased M. deliciosa dry weight (86.75%), root: shoot ratio (73.23%), N (99.44%), P (116.13%), K (124.40%), Pb (78.81%), and Cu (159.01%) accumulation respectively. In summary, FB3 treatment achieved the best effects in promoting plant growth and soil remediation. These findings revealed that sewage sludge and garden waste biochar could be recycled as amendments for poor acid soils under restoration, a sustainable development path for urban waste disposal.
