Evaluation of the IEEE 802.11p multi-channel operation in vehicular networks

Abstract: Abstract-This paper explores recent improvements in 802.11p multi-channel protocol in vehicular ad-hoc networks. We provide definitions for a vehicular network and explore the operation of 802.11 within a vehicular network. We also study on areas of improvements of this protocol and briefly discuss on advantages and disadvantages of each solution.

“…In the early phases of VANET research, RSUs became an essential part of the VANET architecture (Behravesh & Butler, 2016). “…Page 5 of 20 [27] similar to Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) in IEEE 802.11. One important difference between EDCA and DCF is that the inter-frame spacing interval in EDCA can be arbitrary (AIFS), allowing EDCA to shorten the frame spacing interval for delay-critical applications such as video streaming [6]. Two types of channels are specified for dedicated shortrange communications frequency band in WAVE: CCH (control channel) and SCH (service channel).…”

“…Short safety messages are exchanged during CCH intervals, and infotainment data is transmitted during SCH intervals. Each interval is 50 ms. V2X devices only operate CCH or switch between CCH and SCH [Behravesh and Butler (2016); Chen, Jiang and Delgrossi (2009)]. The WLAN protocol is modified for DSRC, which is an IEEE 802.11p standard.…”

“…The connected vehicles use wireless V2X communication. The V2X suite includes Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), Vehicle-to-Nomadic device (V2N), and Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) algorithms [Shrestha, Bajracharya and Nam (2018); Filippi, Moerman, Daalderop et al (2016); Behravesh and Butler (2016); Song (2017)]. This connectivity is crucially important for an intelligent vehicle.…”
