Las enfermedades respiratorias de vías altas en los equinos son la segunda causa de pérdida deportiva después de las alteraciones músculo-esqueléticas, las cuales pueden generar intolerancia al ejercicio que se evidencia a través de una disminución del rendimiento deportivo. Los trastornos obstructivos de las vías respiratorias altas (VRA) se producen durante el ejercicio del caballo siendo un problema común entre los caballos de carrera, afectando a un 70% de los pacientes con historial de ruido respiratorio o bajo rendimiento. La evaluación de las vías respiratorias altas del equino se realiza por endoscopía. Sin embargo muchas alteraciones de las VRA son de naturaleza dinámica, las cuales se producen solo durante el ejercicio, por lo que no son necesariamente evidentes durante un exámen endoscópico en reposo. Por lo cual, la cinta de alta velocidad (treadmill) y los estudios de endoscopía dinámica en terreno, han revelado que el colapso dinámico de las VRA es una importante causa de los malos resultados en caballos de deporte. Existen variadas formas de colapso dinámico de las VRA, que se han reportado y en muchos casos hasta aproximadamente el 50% son múltiples estructuras colapsando simultáneamente. En Chile no existe el diagnóstico mediante endoscopía dinámica lo que limita un correcto diagnóstico por endoscopía en reposo, por lo que puede resultar en fracasos terapéuticos que se traducen en pérdidas económicas. SUMMARY Upper aiway disseases in horses are the second leading cause of performance loss after musculoskeletal pathologies, which can cause exercise intolerance that is evidenced by a decrease in athletic performance. Obstructive disorders of upper respiratory tract (URT) are produced during horse's exercise, and it´s a common problem among racehorses, affecting 70% of patients with a respiratory noise or poor performance. The evaluation of horse's upper airway is performed by an URT endoscopy. However many alterations of equine's URT are dynamic in nature, which are produced just during exercise, so they are not necessarily evident during an endoscopic examination at rest. Therefore, the treadmill (high-speed tape) and dynamic endoscopy studies in the field have revealed that the dynamic collapse of the URT is a major cause of poor performance in sport horses. In Chile there is no dynamic endoscopy availiable, which limits the correct diagnosis and can result in treatment failure and economic losses.

Moderate exercise stimulates immune system whereas intensive exercise may display immune-suppressive effect associated with the disruption of intestinal barrier. With this study, we tested the effects of moderate and intensive swimming exercises on some cytokines and oxidant variables and zonulin, an intestinal barrier marker, in rats. We also tested possible ameliorative effects of probiotic VSL#3 in both moderate and intensive exercise regimens. Twenty eight rats were randomly divided into 4 equal groups: Control-C, Probiotic-P, Exercise-E, Probiotic+Exercise-PE. The rats in group E and PE underwent moderate swimming exercise for 5 weeks. Following this period, intensive swimming exercise was performed for 5 days. The rats in group C and group P were sedentary. Probiotic VSL#3 was given to group P and PE in the water. At the end of the experiments, serum zonulin, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, TGF-β, MDA, and protein carbonyl levels were determined. Evidences obtained from present study indicate that moderate swimming exercise improves barrier integrity of intestine and decreases oxidative stress. During the moderate swimming experiment, probiotic VSL#3 supplementation may also improve inflammatory response. On the other hand, intensive exercise does not led changes in the inflammatory response and oxidative stress, but beneficial responses of moderate exercise on the selected parameters probably disappear due to the intense exercise-induced mild stress. Bu çalışma ile ratlarda ılımlı ve yoğun yüzdürme egzersizlerinin bazı sitokinlere, oksidan değişkenlere ve intestinal bariyer belirteci zonuline etkilerini değerlendirdik. Ayrıca probiyotik VSL#3'ün hem ılımlı hem de yoğun yüzdürme periyodundaki olası iyileştirici etkilerini test ettik. Yirmi sekiz rat, rasgele 4 eşit gruba ayrıldı: Kontrol-C, Probiyotik-P, Egzersiz-E, Probiyotik+Egzersiz-PE. E ve PE grubundaki ratlara 5 hafta süreyle ılımlı yüzdürme egzersizi ve ılımlı yüzdürme periyodunu takiben 5 gün süreyle yoğun yüzdürme egzersizi yaptırıldı. C ve P grupları ise sedanter grupları oluşturdu. P ve PE gruplarına içme suyu ile probiyotik VSL#3 verildi. Deneylerin sonunda serumda zonulin, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, TGF-β, MDA ve protein karbonil düzeyleri belirlendi. Sonuçlar ılımlı yüzdürme egzersizinin bağırsak bariyer bütünlüğünü koruduğunu ve oksidatif stresi azalttığını göstermektedir. Ilımlı egzersiz sürecinde probiyotik VSL#3 alınması yangısal yanıtı da olumlu etkileyebilir. Diğer taraftan yoğun egzersiz herhangi bir yangısal yanıta ve oksidatif strese neden olmamıştır. Fakat ılımlı egzersizin ortaya çıkardığı faydalı yanıtlar muhtemelen yoğun egzersizin oluşturduğu hafif şiddetteki stres nedeniyle ortadan kalkmıştır.

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of anabolic steroids on eccentric exercise-induced kidney tissue, using biochemical and histological methods. Sprague Dawley male rats (n=36) were equally divided into the estrogen (17-β Estradiol, 10 mg/kg per day)induced and non estrogen-induced groups. Both groups were subdivided into as rest groups (n=6), and as exposed to the eccentric exercise groups (n=12) that were also subdivided into decapitated one hour (n=6) and 48 hour (n=6) groups after eccentric exercise. Histopathological effects of estrogen treatment on eccentric exercise-induced rat kidney tissues were seen. The histopathological results revealed that hemorrhage, endothelium-dependent vasodilatations and degenerative changes in proximal tubules, glomeruli, and connective tissue in the estrogen-given and estrogen-given plus eccentric exercise groups. Distal tubule degenerations and dilatations with peritubular capillary dilatations and polymorphonuclear leucocyte (PMNL) infiltrations to connective tissue in eccentric exercise and eccentric exercise plus estrogen-given groups were detected but also it was noticeable decreases in PMNL infiltrations in estrogen-given groups. Biochemical results showed oxidative stress in experimental groups except Control group. It has been concluded that estrogen could not have been effective for preventing eccentric exercise-induced kidney damage and might have toxic effects on kidney tissues on clinical practice however anti-inflammatory effect on kidney tissue detected. It has been requested further investigation.
