Evaluation of the cytotoxicity and phototoxicity of Caryocar brasiliense supercritical carbon dioxide extract

Abstract: BackgroundCaryocar brasiliense Camb (Pequi) is a typical Brazilian Cerrado fruit tree. Its fruit is used as a vitamin source for culinary purposes and as a source of oil for the manufacture of cosmetics. C. brasiliense supercritical CO2 extracts exhibit antimicrobial activity against the bacteria Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus and also possess antioxidant activity. This study was designed to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxicity and phototoxicity of the supercritical CO2 extra… Show more

“…O pequizeiro (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.)

“…Chlorpromazine (PIF=35.59) was a potential phototoxic hazard and results were obtained for the cell viability with a difference approximately 35-fold in EC 50 values, with and without UV light (Table 4). Amaral et al [39] presented that the IC 50 values for Caryocar brasiliense supercritical CO 2 extract (CBSE) in the phototoxicity assay considered 6.50% w/v in dark conditions and 35.53% w/v in irradiated conditions. According to the PIF value, the CBSE not exhibited phototoxic potential (PIF=0.18).…”

“…The economic and cultural importance of the pequi fruit for the Cerrado population is well known, especially for those who work in family farming [ 4 ]. The pequi tree is the subject of industrial agriculture in Brazil, and the fruit of the pequi is extensively used in food and oil production; therefore, the raw materials are widely available [ 5 ].…”
