Evaluation of the Bactericidal Activity on Oral Organisms of the Nd-YAP Laser In Vitro

Abstract: The bactericidal activity of a pulsed fibre-optic Nd-YAP laser on various strains of oral bacteria: Prevotella nigrescens, Streptococcus sanguis, Actinomyces viscosus (i), Fusobacterium nucleatum, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Peptostreptococcus micros (i) was evaluated. A 200-μm optical fibre was placed in Eppendorf tubes containing the different bacterial suspensions. At an energy of 170 mJ/30 Hz, 351 pulses of 150 μs were sufficient to kill the most resistant bacteria (i). The exposure time was 2… Show more

“…The laser's ability to inflict bacterial mortality (Coffelt et al, 1997;Nandakumar et al, 2002a) has been exploited to devise a laser-based sterilization technique of surgical tools (Andrian and Gross, 1979;Powell and Whisenant, 1991) and in surgery in medical and dental fields (Deckelbaum, 1994;Lee et al, 1999). The research in laser-microbe interaction so far is aimed for a quick bacterial mortality by using highpower laser irradiation (Rochd et al, 1998;Ward et al, 2000;Yeo et al, 1998). Laser irradiation is known to make molecular changes inside the bacterial cell (Ito, 1978;Ito and Ito, 1983;Kelland et al, 1983) and cell membrane (Davi, 1986) and produce reactive radicals that are harmful to the cell (Wilson, 1993).…”

“…Varios trabajos (3,4,11,19) han demostrado la capacidad del Láser en quitar el tejido de granulación, esterilizar el cemento radicular sin removerlo y alterar la estructura del sarro subgingival, este ultimo sería por lo tanto más fácil de quitar por la acción de la hoja de la cureta (2,23). En el tratamiento de las bolsas periodontales, expresión clínica de la enfermedad, la planificación del tratamiento depende de t Fig.…”
