Evaluation of the Adult Strabismus-20 (AS-20) Questionnaire Using Rasch Analysis

Abstract: The AS-20 benefits from reduction to 4 subscales (self-perception, interaction, reading function, and general function) and reducing the response options in the general function subscale from 5 to 4 options. The refined AS-20 may prove to be even more responsive to HRQOL changes in adult strabismus following treatment or changes over time.

“…2,14,15 To standardize the order of completing questionnaires, the Persian version of AS-20 was completed first, and then the Persian version of the NEI-VFQ-25 (excluding items of general health) was completed immediately. 3 After evaluating the questionnaire, 130 consecutive patients diagnosed with strabismus requiring surgical treatment in the strabismus clinic of the Farabi Eye Hospital (Tehran, Iran) in 2013 were included in the study. Patients under 15 years of age were excluded, as were those with facial or lid abnormalities (including ptosis, severe lid retraction, or 7th nerve palsy), psychological or neurological problems (including myasthenia gravis), or body dysmorphic disorder.…”

“…1 This questionnaire was not applicable in our country due to cultural and language differences. In addition, most studies on the AS-20 assessed preoperative cases, [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] and only few of them evaluated postsurgical HRQOL in the patients with strabismus. [9][10][11][12] In this study, we developed a Persian version of the AS-20 and used the new questionnaire to evaluate the effect of strabismus surgery on HRQOL.…”
