Evaluation of Sustainable Development in European Union Countries

Abstract: Despite the great importance of sustainable development for a country, it is possible to say, having reviewed the literature widely, that this research is the first to use a Multi-Criteria Decision Method (MCDM) to analyze the sustainability of EU countries, considering different dimensions and weighting the criteria with the help of a group of experts. This paper therefore sets out a Multi-Criteria Model for analyzing the development of sustainability in EU countries (and Norway and Iceland). This required pr… Show more

“…In the mentioned case, Romania and Bulgaria are in last place, again. To estimate the achieving of the sustainable development goals, Martín and Carnero [52] applied the AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process). The obtained ranking emphasizes Norway as a country with very high sustainability, while Sweden, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands achieved a high degree of sustainability.…”

“…adjusted net savings. Another assessment of sustainable development in EU countries was conducted by Martin & Carnero (2019) with the application of a multi-criteria model developed with the use of the multi-criteria analytic hierarchy process (AHP) technique. A different approach to the measurement of sustainable development was proposed by Kovačič (2017), who determined correlations between various aspects of sustainable development with the use of the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient.…”

“…Moreover, the evaluation factors may not be comprehensively enough, which can be solved by using a particle swarm optimization algorithm. This method iterates the experience and judgments of expert's step by step to find the optimized evaluation scheme [61]. AHP usually employs the following steps:…”
