Evaluation of supplementary stevia (Stevia rebaudiana, bertoni) leaves and stevioside in broiler diets: effects on feed intake, nutrient metabolism, blood parameters and growth performance

Abstract: A perennial schrub, stevia, and its extracts are used as a natural sweetener and have been shown to possess antimicrobial properties. Stevia contains high levels of sweetening glycosides including stevioside which is thought to possess antimicrobial and antifungal properties. Little is known about the nutritional value of the schrub in livestock. This study determined the potential use of the shrub as a prebiotic animal feed supplement in light of the recent ban on the use of antibiotics in animal feed and the… Show more

“…Likewise, Park and Cha [15] observed less weight gain in mice consuming a high fat diet with stevia supplemented water compared to a high fat diet with sucrose supplemented water. Alternatively, abdominal fat mass appears to be greater in animals fed a stevia supplemented diet compared to a control diet indicating that the artificial sweetener promotes obesity [16]. The present study, similar to Oliveira-Filho et al [14], clearly shows that prolonged use of Reb-A does not promote obesity.…”

“…Thus, obese people are able to lose weight, thanks to the fact that they can continue to eat sweet foods whilst lowering their sugar intake [16]. In addition, steviol glycosides have been shown to participate in the reduction of blood cholesterol [16] and improve cell regeneration and blood clotting, as well as suppressing neoplastic growth and strengthening blood vessels [17,18].…”

“…Stevia glycosides possess valuable biological properties. It has been proved that regular consumption of these compounds reduces glucose and cholesterol concentrations (Atteh et al, 2008), enhances the regeneration of cells and blood clotting, inhibits tumor cell growth and strengthens blood vessels (Jeppesen et al, 2003;Barriocanal et al, 2008;Maki et al, 2008). Moreover, it has been noted that the substances food products.…”
